What does Bezos do with all his money?
A quick Google search shows Jeff Bezos’ net worth is more than $160 billion right now. Most of that is due to his groundbreaking company, which you might know by the name of Amazon. Turns out, creating a multi-trillion dollar entity means you’re a centibillionaire. He still owns more than 10% of the company.
He started the company with some investment from family, initially concentrating on the online sale of books, and eventually getting into many other markets, even cloud computing. He took the company public a few years later and the stock has been one of the best performers over that time, rising roughly 155000% during that time!
So what does this centibillionaire spend his money on? Well, the first answer that comes to mind is almost anything he would like to do. But let’s get into the specifics a bit.
For starters, he bought something that most people would never even consider: Washington Post! That’s right, a newspaper. He bought the company in 2013 for a reported $250 million. The newspaper’s readership has apparently increased since then due to its increased digital offerings.
Bezos is also a space travel fanatic. He’s got a company named Blue Origin to show for it. He invested $7.5 billion in the space exploration company in the year 2000 and has continued investing in that business. The progress of Blue Origin is generally compared with Elon Musk’s SpaceX on social media, in essence turning it into a battle between the two centibillionaires, even though both companies have different goals.
Needless to say, the guy has a lot of real estate. He has a $165 million home in Beverly Hills, which is home to many other prominent public figures. He also owns an estate in Washington, near the Amazon Headquarters in Seattle. Bezos is also one of the top landowners in the USA, with more than 400,000 acres of land to his name.
Being a billionaire means you get to travel in style too. He has a $65 million jet that would get him anywhere without all the hassle normal people face. He has a collection of exotic and expensive cars according to reports, with a $4.8 million Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita as the highlight.
He’s also invested in a few unusual projects, including a “10000-year clock” being built in Texas and an expedition to recover one of the Apollo 12 rocket engines from the floor of the Atlantic Ocean. But he doesn’t just spend on himself, he’s given away a lot of money to help with issues like climate change and cancer research.
While the money he’s made seems like a lot for one person, we need to understand the value he has created for the world. How many times do you order things online every month? This guy made that possible. He famously said in an interview a few years back that if Amazon is worth $1 trillion, and he owns 16% of it, that means he’s made $840 billion for other people. Simple, create value for others and reap the rewards. Create billions of dollars worth of value for others and you get rewards in the billions too.
